By NY-USAW Media

History Was Made in Cedar Rapids as JJ Sullivan & Vincenzo Mannello Became first NYers to win Triple Crown; M. Mannello Earns A Double Doubles; Schimek & Brower Add FS Gold

Joseph "JJ Sullivan (14U 80 Pounds; 10-0; 1st GR, 1st FS)

OVERVIEW:
Adding to a season that also featured wins at the Super 32, the WOW Kickoff Classic, USAW Folk Nationals, the Portuese/NE Regionals (FS), and the Tallinn Open (FS) among other feats; the future Monroe Woodbury Crusader posted a perfect 10-0 record between the two international styles to officially become the FIRST Empire State resident to win a USAW Kids Triple Crown!!

His outstanding dissection of the brackets in each discipline coming on the heels of an 18-0 record at 14U National Duals; it is no wonder why pundits believe that Sullivan has the tools to be follow in the footsteps of recent Section 9 living legends such as Zack Ryder (Former 4x NYSPHSAA State Champion; 3x UWW Age-Group FS World Medalist/2024 U20 Runner-up) and PJ Duke (4x NYSPHSAA State titlist; 2024 UWW U20 FS World Bronze Medalist; 2025 World Team Member on the Senior, U23, and U20 levels)!

GRECO-ROMAN:
Still very much a neophyte in the GR discipline; you'd never know it by the way that Sullivan was able to navigate his way past some incredibly accomplished foes on Friday....

Entering the party somehow unseeded; he'd peel off wins at various stages over the top-4 wrestlers in the field!

Squaring off against Arkansas's second-seeded Hayes Daniel  (Multiple-time USAW Folk All-American; Multiple-time USAW FS/GR All-American (2024 Double 12U finalist/GR Champion; 2022 10U GR titlist) in the finale; Sullivan was able to drive him straight to his back for a 4-pointer; before then transitioning to a gut-wrench for consecutive 2pt exposures to notch the 8-0 TF in a time of 0:31!!

Daniel being the second former/returning Greco titlist in a row that the Apex trained standout was able to topple; one round earlier; Sullivan broke a 4-4 deadlock (exchange of 4-point moves) when he launched the top-seeded representative from Alaska, Kanin Kumfer (Multiple-time USAW Kids FS/GR All-American/2024 14U GR National Champion/2023 12U FS Champion), for his second four-pointer of the contest on route to emerging with an 8-5 decision!!

Kumfer later went on to finish 7th in FS!

The quarterfinals witnessed Sullivan turn a 5-4 advantage at the break into an 11-5 decision when he struck for a 4-point throw and then added a 2pt exposure via arm-spin during the final 2:00 of regulation versus 2024 USAW 14U GR 4th, #3 Giovanni Nix (IL)!!!

Sullivan set the tone for the kind of day #1 it was going to be when he banked one TD apiece in each period to pick up a 4-1 decision in R16 at the expense of Michigan's #4 Brennan Hart (Multiple-time USAW Folk National All-American/2023 12U Runner-up; Multiple-time USAW Kids FS/GR AA ('24 12U GR Runner-up; '22 10U FS Runner-up)!

Hart later took 3rd in FS!

Complementing the New Yorker's 5-0 overall resume was an 26-second (8-0 TF) dub in his opening bout over Killian Ormond of North Carolina!!
------------------------------------------

FREESTYLE:
On Sunday morning, Sullivan closed out a two-day effort that witnessed him outscore his opponents by a margin of 52-2 when he pitched an 11-0 technical fall (1:31) in the 14U, 80-pound FS finale over Andrew Taussig (Kansas)!!!

Already leading 4-0 in the match against Taussig (2024 Double 12U All-American/FS National Champion; Multiple-time Tulsa Nationals finalist/champion) after converting a pair of takedowns at the onset; Sullivan would defend a head-pinch attempt for a 2pt counter exposure before then transitioning to a leg-lace for back-to-back turns to finish off what would have been a 10-0 superiority triumph...

An extra point was tacked on to his total when Taussig's corner unsuccessfully challenged the scoring of the head-pinch sequence!!

His performance in the money match reminiscent of how the entire freestyle portion of his week in Cedar Rapids transpired; on Saturday, the decorated S9er phenom punched his ticket to the finals by going posting a 4-0 record with his wins taking the form of 11-0, 8-1, 12-1, and 10-0 triumphs over Georgie Dipsey (NJ), Sam Smith (IA), Samuel Svitana (CA), & Grady Glowacki (IL)!!!

Already up 1-0 versus Dipsey (2025 NHSCA MS National Champion; 2024 Super 32 MS 4th; 2025 USAW Folk Nationals 14U National Runner-up; 6th earlier in the week in GR discipline), Sullivan converted a takedown and then transitioned into a leg-lace for four turns to knock off the Garden Stater in a time of 1:24....

Collecting a pair of takedowns in each period (four in total), including a beautiful dump in the last half-minute of regulation to close out his scoring; the only point Sullivan allowed was a caution +1 in the last 40 ticks of the 2nd period against Smith (2024 Super 32 11U 3rd; Multiple-time Roller AA/2024 Tulsa 2nd)...

Hitting his bread-and-butter stepover counter attack for a pair of takedowns and a 2pt exposure as the crux of an 8-1 lead at the break in his quarterfinal with Svitana (2024 USAW Double 14U 6th...Multiple-time Reno Worlds placer/2025 Runner-up); Sullivan punctuated the 12-1 TF by utilizing a crotch-lift for consecutive turns during the opening 15 seconds of the 2nd!

The semis clash with Glowacki (2025 USAW Folk Nationals 4th; 2024 USAW 14U FS 5th; Multiple-time Ohio Tournament of Champions Titlist) saw Sullivan break the ice with a throw-by for the TD :12 into the 1st  period....Once in par terre; the NYer was relentless, turning his Prairie State nemesis four times with a tight leg-lace to polish off a :31 drubbing!

SULLIVAN'S PATH TO THE TRIPLE-CROWN

Vincenzo Mannello (14U 120 Pounds; 8-0; 1st GR, 1st FS)

OVERVIEW:
Within moments of Sullivan becoming the first Triple Crown recipient in NY youth wrestling history; he had company in the club when NY-USAW's #1 overall 2029 prospect/2x NYSPHSAA DI placer, Mannello, polished off his own unscathed (8-0) body of work in the Hawkeye State!!!

In the midst of an absolute tear, with the exception of losing to the same opponent twice in GR at the 14U National Duals (16-2), the BBHVW 8th grader has been damn near invincible since the conclusion of the scholastic season...

His hardware under the roof of the Alliant Energy PowerHouse is the next bullet point during an "offseason" that has seen him win a NHSCA MS National title, the brass ring at the Journeymen World Classic, Double Blatnick gold, a sweep of the Portuese/NE Regional top prizes; as well as individual victories at the War At the Shore and the Ohio Tournament of Champions!!

GRECO-ROMAN:
Growing stronger with each subsequent trip to the mat, Mannello vaulted himself from a #7 seed to the top of the mountain when in a then scoreless match, he defended a throw-by attempt and tossed Tennessee's Storm Murphy (2025 USAW Folk Nationals 4th) to his back for a stick at the 1:15 mark of their finals showdown!!!

Murphy later took 3rd in FS!

The win over "Vol" being the third straight bout in which the Section 1 standout did not surrender a point; in earlier action on Friday, he banked consecutive tech in the quarterfinals (9-0) and semis (10-0) versus #2 seed Reece Vendegna (WI) and sixth-seeded Daxton Folsom (MO)...

Against the "Cheesehead" (Multiple-time USAW 14U Folk Nationals All-American), he turned a 1-0 lead into a 5-0 cushion when he used double-unders to drive Vendegna to the mat for a 4-pointer with approximately 1:00 remaining in the 1st period...

In the last :20, the NYer defended a head-pinch attempt to catch his opposition on his back for a 2pt exposure; he then turned him again during a continuation of the sequence!!!

Vendegna was 6th in freestyle during the back-half of the weekend!

The match with Folsom [2025 USAW 14U Folk National Runner-up] was highlighted by Mannello exploding for a 2pt chest-wrap and two turns via gut-wrench to vault himself to an immediate 6-0 advantage :40 into the semifinal clash....

In the last :45 of the stanza, Mannello managed to work his way behind his nemesis and then proceeded to hit a textbook lift/throw for 4pts!!

Folsom went on to earn bronze in freesyle

His biggest challenge being posed in his opening round outing; Mannello found himself deadlocked at 5-5 in the 2nd period against Keystone Stater, Islam Sadyrbekov; but would came on strong in the last 90 seconds; lowering the curtain on a 6-0 run (two takedowns + a 2pt counter exposure off a failed lat drop attempt)!
------------------------------------------

FREESTYLE:
The GPS trained "freak" capped off a brilliant 4-0 FS resume when he steamrolled his way to a 14-1 (3:15) superiority conquest in the freestyle finals over Oklahoma's Nash Denison (24-'25 Trinity Award recipient; 2024 USAW 12U FS National Champion; 2024 U.S. Open Futures FS Runner-up; 2024 Super 32 MS 8th)!!

A four-point power-double while up 10-1 serving as the perfect punctuation to his Sunday matinee; Mannello (3rd in '25) made a difficult task look easy as he built a 6-1 cushion at the break by cashing-in for a pair of takedowns in the first 30 seconds of the first period; and then later added a 2pt exposure in the final :40 of the stanza....

Staying on the hunt, he piled on by striking for yet another TD + a 2pt gut (10-1) in the initial half minute of the 2nd  to set up his last act cited above!!

His title-match demonstration being his third bonus point dub in four FS appearances; on Saturday, Mannello made short work of his R16 and quarterfinal opponents when he racked up a 10-0 TF against Jameson Steffes (WI) and then followed it up by sticking Julian Chavez, of Indiana at the 52-second mark (while up 8-0)!!

Versus the former [Steffes], a pair of snap + spin takedowns, complemented by a gut-wrench hat trick (after the second TD) enabled the New Yorker to get on and off the mat in a time of 45 seconds!!!

Exploding for two separate 4-point takedowns against Chavez; Mannello switched off to a bodylock for the first of the big moves; and then struck again shortly after with a lethal high-C from feet-to-back as a precursor to the eventual slap of the mat!!!

His grit and guts tested only once; his semifinal clash with Illinois' Adonis Washington (2025 Greco-Roman 3rd; 2024 USAW 14U FS 8th; Multiple-time USAW Folk National All-American) was one of the most talked about matches of the weekend!!

Pushed to the brink, but surviving behind a 13-11 decision; just moments after giving up a 2pt exposure to trail 11-10; Mannello was able to respond when off the ensuing scramble, he utilized a turk for his own 2-pointer at the buzzer to pull in front, 12-11....

Having won a key challenge earlier in the bout; Washington's corner would throw the brick; but this time, the verdict did not go in their favor to account for the extra point!

Truly a match of runs; the New Yorker found himself in a 3-0 hole at the onset of the 1st period; but answered back by peeling off the next 10(!!!!) unanswered points...

Converting three takedowns + 2pt turn via turk (after the 2nd takedown); he'd head into the intermission enjoying an 8-3 lead...

Mannello seemingly closing out the match when up 10-2, he was awarded a 4-point TD off of a double; the aforementioned successful review request by the Illinois' corner resulted in the 4 going in the other direction to make it a 10-7 bout with 1:10 still to be contested...

Washington cut the war to 10-9 when he cashed in a single-leg with just 1:00 remaining in the 2nd period to set up the dramatic conclusion!

MANNELLO'S PATH TO THE TRIPLE-CROWN

Marcarlo Mannello (14U 100 Pounds; 8-0; 1st GR, 1st FS)

OVERVIEW:
Doing his part to give the family a clean sweep of hardware would be the younger of the dynamic Mannello duo!!!

Just missing out on his own chance at a Triple Crown when he finished 3rd in January during the folkstyle leg of the circuit; NY-USAW's top-ranked 2030 Big Boarder refused to be denied his "Flowers" and "Respect", as he boasted an 8-0 vitae to double up in Iowa this past weekend!!

Since finishing 5th on South Pearl Street in March; like his older brother, Marcarlo has done more than his fair share of winning of late; as demonstrated by double title appearances at the Blatnick and Portuese; a JWC gold; and triumphs at the War At the Shore and the Ohio Tournament of Champions!!

GRECO-ROMAN:
The sensational 7th grader concluded off an immaculate 4-0 resume on day #1 in Cedar Rapids when he pitched the 9-0 TF in the finale over local rooting favorite, Lincoln Whitcome (IA)...

Already up 1-0 after inducing a stepout at the onset of the contest; the BBHVW/GPS protege blew open the match when he was able to slip a headlock attempt for a 2pt takedown; and then immediately tacked on a 2pt gut to jump out to a 5-0 cushion less than half-a-minute into the 1st period...

His coronation now seemingly a question of "when", not "if", he later added two additional TDs to get on and off the mat in a time of 1:33!!

His finale heroics in no way taken for granted/overshadowed; on paper, it would actually be his two previous outings that especially commanded respect!

Seeded 5th, Mannello would emerge with triumphs by way of 8-5 decision and 2:42 stick in the quarters and semis over the #4 and #1 seeds---Eli Sandoval (NV) and Manny Novelli (AK)....

Versus the former, Sandoval [2024 USAW Double 14U AA/GR National Runner-up; 2023 U.S. Open Futures GR National Champion); Mannello drew first blood when he hit a 4pt headlock :22 into the opening stanza...

With the Nevada entry showing no quit and continually battling back (to get to within 4-3 and then 6-5); Mannello came up clutch in repeatedly answering back with takedowns...

In the semis, he denied Novelli a fourth straight Greco-Roman gold (GR three-peat in 2022-2024; 2023 12U Double Champion) when trailing 3-0, he whipped the Alaskan directly to his back where he was held until the slap of the mat echoed!!!

In his only other trip to the mats on Friday, Mannello made quick work of R16 foe, Laydon Knox (MO), by way of an 8-0 TF in a mere 29 ticks!!
------------------------------------------
FREESTYLE:
Two days removed from hoisting Greco-Roman hardware; the Section 1 prodigy made sure he'd be towing TWO brass rings with him back to NY when in his weekend encore outing, he hung on for a 2-2 criteria decision in the title contest over Floridan, Leonydes Peraza (finished 7th in GR earlier in the festivities)...

His lone score of the finale coming during the opening :30 of the 1st period; Mannello was able to get in deep in a single-leg and used the position to eventually expose Peraza for 2pts to carry a 2-0 lead into the intermission...

In the last 1:00 of regulation, Peraza was awarded a point for an activity clock violation (:48 to go); and tied it up on an induced stepout with 26 ticks to go....But that is all he'd muster as Mannello withstood the late charge!!!

Amassing a 30-4 margin from the start to the conclusion of his freestyle heroics on Saturday/Sunday; Marcarlo reached Sunday's main event by knocking off three foes on day #2 by way of 10-0, 8-2, and 10-0 outcomes...

Highlighted by a 4pt headlock (while already leading 4-0; TD + gut); Mannello got off to the ideal start, as he finished off the superiority triumph in his opening round match in a time of :25 when he utilized his second gut-wrench of the match over Indiana's Brian Wesley!

Pitted in the quarterfinals against Estevan Maximo Jr. (Multiple-time USAW Folk National All-American; 2023 USAW 12U FS 4th), of Arizona, Mannello surrendered a TD at the buzzer of the 2nd period to spoil the shutout; but was otherwise in total control as six of his eight points came during the initial 40 seconds of the 1st; when he got in deep on a single-leg and used the position to earn a 4pt exposure before then scrambling for another 2pt exposure to boast a 6-0 cushion at the midway point...

He'd increased the margin to 8-0 when he doubled-off (after threatening a go-behind) for a takedown as the clock dipped below 1:00 remaining in regulation to round out the damage inflicted!!

His tenacity in the semis while opposed by Ohio's Parker Workman best described as a "dog on a bone", Mannello stockpiled five TDs, with the culmination being a go-behind in the last :05 of regulation!!!

Kam Schimek (8U 70 pounds; 5-1; 1st FS, 3rd GR)

OVERVIEW:
Dropping his match of the weekend in Greco-Roman; the Falconer resident never tasted defeat again; as he'd peel together five straight wins between styles to earn Double All-American honors (3rd GR, Champion FS) in Cedar Rapids!!

The author of quite the freestyle resume during the last few months; hoisting the national hardware was a fitting conclusion to a season in which he previously prevailed on both the state [Blatnick] and regional [Portuese] levels!!
_________________________________

GRECO-ROMAN:
His weekend in Iowa not getting off to the most ideal start; the New Yorker found himself on the wrong side of an 8-0 TF loss to eventual GR Champion, Till Stroud, of Minnesota...

However, he'd shake off this initially adversity and build momentum on day #1 when he clawed back to outscore his next two foes by a combined margin of 18-2 en route to posting respective 8-0 and 10-2 triumphs over Missouri's Cameron Chartier (2025 Kids Double AA) and Sebastian Valle (2025 USAW Folk National 3rd), of Indiana!
------------------------------------------
FREESTYLE:
Avenging his only loss of the festivities to finish of his two-day stay in the Hawkeye State; Schmikek was dominant from start to finish as he built a 10-0 lead before eventually securing the fall in a time of 1:08 over Stroud !!

Turning defense into offense during the bout; the NYer was able to build a 4-0 when he hit a pair of counter crotch-lifts...

When the action returned to the feet; he stuffed a headlock attempt and instead would be the one credited with a four-pointer to go up 8-0...

During the continuation of the sequence following the throw; he'd transition to a cow-catcher for a 2pt exposure that would have completed a TF had he not shortly after earned the pin instead!!

The revenge victory (lost 8-0 in GR) spoiled Stroud's bid for a USAW Triple Crown (had previously won folkstyle in January; and Greco on Friday)

The sticking of the Gopher product [Stroud] capping off a 3-0 effort on Saturday for the S6 resident (Falconer); Schimek reached the finals behind respective 3:58 fall and 8-6 verdicts over Aiden Balderas (KS) and the aforementioned Valle (IN)....

Against Balderas, who was the 2025 GR runner-up, Schimek would display tremendous poise, as leading 8-6, he'd fend off a very deep attack and scramble to the top position for a 2pt TD while simultaneously trapping the "Jayhawk" with a power-half for the mat slap in the final :03 of duration...

A back-and-forth bout; the Ragin Raisin rep [Schimek] actually led 8-2 with just over :40 remaining in the 1st period after scoring with a 2pt crotch-lift, a 2pt head-pinch, a 2pt chest-wrap, and then a conventional TD before withstanding a rally from Balderas!!!

The semifinal contest with Valle saw Schimek battle back from a 6-4 deficit down the homestretch, as he again relied on his stellar "D" to save the day; exposing the "Hoosier" on two straight occasions with crotch-lifts in the last 50 of the 2nd period...

As noted above, the comeback win gave Schimek a sweep versus Valle!

Lincoln Brower (12U 74 Pounds; 9-2; 1st FS, 4th GR)

OVERVIEW:
Having already seized the 12U National Crown in Folkstyle back in January; a fourth place finish during the Greco proceedings halted his bid for a Triple Crown; but when focus shifted to freestyle; Brower could not have been any better during Saturday/Sunday's action!!!

His FS title this past weekend joins the Double Portuese/Northeast prizes he previously claimed in May!!

GRECO-ROMAN:
The Chester, NY resident would punch his ticket to the semifinals when he strung together three straight victories by scores of 12-4, 10-3, and 8-1 over the likes of Oklahoma's Axel Stravlo (Multiple-time USAW Kids GR All-American; 2023 USAW 10U FS 4th), Iowa's Braxton Irvine (2025 Double USAW 6th; Multiple USAW Kids AA in both styles/2022 Double 8U Champion; 2025 USAW Folk Nationals 4th; 2022 Super 32 5th), & top-seeded Ian Weber (Multiple-time Super 32 All-American; 2025 Double USAW 5th; Multiple-time USAW Folk National Champion; Multiple-time USAW FS-GR National Champion in both styles...Multiple-time KO Classic All-American) of Wisconsin!!!

Suffering a loss in the championship round of 4 to the eventual GR titlist, Quentin Neal (2025 U.S. Open Future FS Runner-up; 2025 USAW Folk National Runner-up; 2024 Super 32 5th; 2024 Double 12U FS/GR Bronze Medalist; Multiple-time Roller WOW Series All-American/'24 KO Classic titlist), the Apex Wrestling School pupil [Brower] went on to split his next two outings...

In a rematch with Irvine; he was even more domineering than the prior meeting, as he collected an 8-0 TF in a time of 2:20!!

Brower battled hard, but wound up in 4th after sustaining a 4-2 loss in the 3rd/4th contest to former (2021) Roller Trinity Recipient, Cael Marcotte (2025 GR 3rd; 2025 U.S. Open Double Futures Champion; 2023 USAW 10U FS titlist), of California!!
------------------------------------------
FREESTYLE:
Mounting a successful redemption tour on Days #2 and #3; Brower avenged both of his GR losses when he posted a 5-4 decision in Saturday's quarterfinals over Neal; and then kept that mojo blowing on Sunday via an 11-0 toppling of Marcotte, in the finale!!

Neal, who upended the New Yorker, 2-0, in the Greco semis, was the only opponent who offered much in the way of a challenge to Brower; as the Empire Stater banked a pair of early 1st period TDs to jump out to a 4-0 advantage; but the Mizzou rep answered back with a takedown of his own in the 1st period and then a pair of caution points in the last half-minute of the 2nd to square the match at 4-4 (still trailing on criteria)...

In the waning moments of the contest, Neal's corner were unsuccessful in their requested review of an attempted go-behind in the final :07 of regulation; thus accounting for the extra point being added for Brower!!

The title collision with Marcotte was not nearly as dramatic or competitive; as Brower used a TD + stepout to carry a 3-0 lead into the intermission; and then really asserted his will when he hit a 4-pointer flying cartwheel off of a leg attack :32 into the 2nd before later adding a 2pt double-leg TD and a 2pt leg-lace for the terminator in a time of 3:02!!!

Sandwiched in the middle of these aforementioned "vows of vengeance" would be an 8-0 blanking of Wisconsin's 3rd-seeded Adam Husk Jr. (2025 Greco Runner-up; Multiple-time Folk National AA/2023 Champion; 2024 Double 12U AA/GR Champion)...

All of his points coming by way of four takedowns; the NY youngster used a single-leg a fireman's in the 1st period; before adding to his lead by striking with a dump and a throw-by during the final 2:00 of action!!!

Clearly on a mission from the get-go; Brower would spend a mere 1:15 combined on the mats in his first two outs, as he registered back-to-back identical 10-0 techs in the rounds of 32 and 16 versus Eliace Majka (CO) and rooting favorite, Jaxsyn Walk (IA)!

A pair of takedowns (double-leg off the whistle; spin behind later) were supplemented by three turns (two via leg-lace after the first TD) in the 49-second effort at the expense of Majka...

Utilizing a high-C to a backdoor finish for the TD; Brower quickly transitioned to a leg-lace, which he rolled through on four straight occasions to make for an even more expedited (:26) affair against Walk!
