Dropping just 11 total individual matches throughout their four duals (41-11); the Warriors of Minisink Valley steam-rolled the competition en route to claiming the program's third NYSPHSAA DI State Duals crown (previously won it all in 2020 and 2022)!!
Boasting nine different student-athletes---Colin Matone (124), Nate Racz (!38), Joseph Uhrig (145), Anthony Tresch (152), Wyatt Boice (160), PJ Duke (170), Zachary Filip (190), Timmy Duke (215), & Kevin Crowe-Bailey (285)---that completed the weekend with unblemished 4-0 record---the Green & White juggernaut rolled from start to the finish by posting triumphs by commanding scores of 55-7, 54-15, 56-12, and 51-13 over the likes of HM Niagara Wheatfield (VI), #7 Briarcliff-Byram Hills-Valhalla-Westlake (I), #5 Webster Schroeder (V), and #10 Farmingdale (VIII)!
The victory over the Dalers in Saturday's evening finale closing out a 19-0 resume in 2024-2025 for the Kevin Gallagher led program; the win also had the added benefit of snapping a two-year drought in the NYS Dual finals, as MV improved to 3-3 all-time in "money duals" (runners-up in 2018, 2023, 2024)!!!
In their seven appearances since the inception of the event in 2018; the Warrior dynasty has accrued a mind-blowing 22-4 vitae!
A loss at 131 pounds in the opening bout of the finals dual briefly putting them in a 3-0 hole; it was the aforementioned immaculate block from 138-285 that enabled Minisink Valley to immediately regroup and inevitably overwhelm their foes from Nassau County as Racz and Tresch notched decisions in their matches; while Uhrig, Boice, both Duke brothers, Filip, and Crowe-Bailey all induced matslaps!!!!
After a scoreless opening 2:00, Racz, the returning two-time S9 placer/2024 State Qualifier converted TDs in the 2nd and 3rd periods to pitch a 7-0 shutout over Cole Riddiough!
#16 ranked Uhrig, who has sectional placements of 5th and 4th to his name, found himself down 5-0 after getting cradled in the last :40 of the 1st period; but responded by hitting a Peterson for the reversal at the onset of the 2nd period before locking up his own cradle for the 2:32 stick of Nicholas Migliaccio!
Tresch, a returning NYSPHSAA DI bronze medalist, showed why he sits in the #2 spot of the state polls when his takedown with 1:22 remaining in regulation broke a 1-1 tie and propelled him to a 4-1 dub over #5 ranked (@160) Eric Wolf (2024 S8 Bronze medalist)...
Boice (3x S9 runner-up; #3 ranked) and [PJ] Duke (#1 ranked; 3x State Champion; 2024 U20 FS World Bronze) utilized a spiral half a cow-catcher respectively to each register sub-1:00 falls at 160 and 170 versus Jovens Theodate and Vincent Wiater...
Leading 6-0 at the time after earning one takedown apiece in the 1st and 2nd periods, the current #7 ranked/returning State 7th place finisher, Filip, made it three matches in a row ended by fall when from top in the 3rd, he ran a bar to secure the pin of 2024 S8 6th, Josh Kama, in a time of 5:09!!
Carving his own legacy at 215 pounds was the back-half of the Duke sibling duo as Timmy came away with one of the biggest wins of his scholastic career when he hit a headlock for 3+4 and then later defended a desperation lat drop for another TD + swipes to build an 11-2 advantage before pinning #17 ranked/2024 S8 5th, Wilson Quintanilla, in the last 16 ticks of the opening stanza (1:44)!
#20 ranked/2024 S9 Bronze medalist, Crowe-Bailey got a quick TD and then powered Michael Suwalski over to his back for the 70-second pin!
At 101 pounds, freshman, Alberto Vicencio Bairan, further extended the streak when in the waning moments of a contest he had trailed for the better part of duration, he was able to toss Greg Bellisari for a takedown to steal the 7-6 decision!!
The suffering for the Long Islanders would cease as Michael Perez-Palacios & Jacob Estrada strung together back-to-back tech falls at 108 and 116 to bring their school to within 45-13...
But Colin Matone put a fitting punctuation on the coronation when after converting a TD :08 into the 1st period to grab the initial 3-0 lead; the sophomore ran a bar + half to stick Richard Demarco in 1:44! at 124 pounds!
Note: 10 of the 13 wrestlers that competed in the finals showdown are back in 2025-2026....So the repeat is feasibly in the cards!
Coming out of the gates en fuego; the Warriors took the first 10 bouts of the dual to never even give the opposition from Section 5 any hope of gaining momentum...
Getting the party started at 124 pounds, Matone built a 6-0 cushion after converting a single-leg and then running a bar for 3NF....He'd stick with the bar for a second turn and this time he was able to cash in for the 1:19 fall over Camden Aruck!
Platooning at the weight class [131], Leo Gangi picked up his lone win of the weekend when a double-leg TD complemented by a bar enabled him to get on and off the mat in a time of 1:19 in his head-to-head versus Zachary Gaura!
Racz made a case for being included in the next installment of the NY-USA rankings when takedowns in the last 1:00 of both the 1st and 3rd periods vaulted him to a 7-4 decision against current #18 Virgil Joseph to increase MV team lead to 15-0....
From 145-160, it was Uhrig, Tresch, and Boice taking turns upending returning sectional place-winner, as the former [Uhrig] used a cross-face cradle to pin Liam Torpey (2x S5 placer) in 1:53; the middle man [Tresch] racked up seven TDs in a 21-5 TF of Ian Pitt (returning S5 5th); and the latter [Boice] sprawled + spun behind for a TD and then transitioned into a cradle to stick Maximus Taylor (2024 S5 5th) at the 44-second mark!
The pin party continued continued from 170 thru 285 as sandwiched in-between a pair of Duke Boys pins (PJ 0:18 over Ethan Clark; Tim 0:17 over returning sectional 5th, Thomas Reed), it was Filip posting the second ranked victory of the dual when he built up a 12-0 margin (TD + two turns in the 1st; reversal in the 2nd) as a precursor to running a tight bar to get the "6" with 1:01 remaining in the 2nd period against 19th-ranked Ashton Allen!!
Crowe-Bailey capped off the scoring for the Warriors when he required just :09 seconds to hurl Jeremiah House to his back with double-unders for the fall!!!
Schroeder prevented the goose-egging when they received wins by way of 7-0 decision, pin in 5:36, and 12-10 decision at 101-116 from Carson Callari, Aiden Vollmer, & Jackson Harrison (over returning S9 4th, Gabriel SImpson)!!!
Leading 14-7 at the conclusion of the first five individual contests (101-131) against the champion Falcons hailing from Section VI; Minisink Valley found nothing but prosperity from the sweet spot/murderer's row portion of their line-up as following a Racz pin (1:28 over Aiden Johnson), it was Uhrig, Tresch, and Boice standing front and center to stockpile three marquee dubs in a row!
Squaring off against 4x sectional placer/2x NYS Qualifier, #14 Garrett Chase; Uhrig broke a 4-4 tie at the end of the 2nd period by exploding for seven points (3+4) in the final 41 seconds of the 3rd period to record the 11-6 decision!
Tresch also survived a barn-burner as tied at 1-1, he struck for the TD in the final 40 seconds of regulation to claim the 4-1 decision over 3rd-ranked/2x State Qualifier, Chase Richards, in a collision that we could very well see again on day #2 of the 2025 NYSPHSAA tourney...
In his clash with former (2022) Sectional 3rd, Dylan Pringle, Boice was dynamite in all areas, as he tallied one takedown in each period and tacked on two separate sets of NF in the 2nd to cruise to a 17-1 technical fall...
The Duke brothers played "beat the clock" with another, as PJ earned his "6" (TD into a turk) in a time of 59 seconds (over Luke Richards); while Timmy was not far behind when his stick (via cradle) occurred at the 1:06 mark against Roman Doyle!
Not to be outdone was Crowe-Bailey; as he launched Peter Sheehan to post the quickest fall of the dual in a time of 0:46!
At 190, Filip received a walk-over!
Earlier in the dual, it was Mason Murphy (108), Simpson (116), and Matone (124) going back-to-back-to-back with verdicts of 0:55 fall (vs. Trent Schwartzkopf), 17-1 TF (against Jacob Sweeney); & 8-5 decision (over Eian Peterson) to morph a 3-0 deficit into a 14-3 lead!!!
For Murphy and Simpson, this put them in the win column for the weekend...
Matone's head-to-head conquest was the most impressive of the bunch as it came at the expense of a 3x State Qualifier/former 2x Sectional gold medalist in the person of Peterson!!
Oliver Lyon and 2x S6 3rd, Muntathar Abbas (were bright spots for Niagara Wheatfield as they picked up wins by scores of 18-6 and 7-4 at 101 and 131 pounds!
Slow starts (lost the opening match in three of their four duals) being about the only "red flag" on an otherwise smooth and domineering collective showing from MV; 12th-ranked/2x Section I Champion, Nicholas Fortugno would draw first blood for BBHWV when he prevailed 4-1 over Simpson at 116 pounds to give the NY-USAW #7 ranked program the early 3-0 lead...
But this victory from the senior "Cat" would serve as something of a fleeting moment for the 2025 Section I Dual Champs; as Minisink rebounded to the tune of getting their arms raised in the next 10 straight matches...
Catalysts towards the rally took the shape of 1st period falls courtesy of Matone (0:34 by bar over Matteo Scali) and Alex Nigro (cradle while up 4-3 to stick Vince Palermiti in 1:53)...
And once the machine started moving; there was no halting it as Racz, Tresch, and Boice each banked signature victories over returning sectional placers...
A TD during the opening half minute of the 2nd period being the deciding factor in the match; Racz topped 9th ranked/2x S1 Champion/2x State Qualifier, Neil Paulercio, by a score of 4-1...
Two weight classes later (following a 17-2 TF by Uhrig against Robbie Barbuto), Tresch put on a clinic from his feet, amassing seven takedowns to blow past 2x S1 placer/2024 runner-up, Thomas Tsoi...
And at 160, the team score grew to 30-3 when Boice capitalized on six takedowns and a turn for 2NF to defeat 2024 S1 Bronze medalist, Peter Hinze, by way of a 20-4 tech!!
True to form/consistent with how the rest of their days played out; PJ Duke (cow-catcher up 12-2), Filip (stuffed a throw attempt and drove the opposition to his back), Tim Duke (bundle), and Crowe-Bailey (bodylock throw) operated at an expedited pace, as they registered pins in times of 1:15, 0:52, 1:19, and :10 versus Rocco Ponticello Vitti, Roman Lombardo, Jack Milton, & Paul Livoti to emphatically leave no doubt!
Featuring a brother act of their own; BBHVW was able to find reason for celebration at the very end of the dual as 7th and 8th-grade sibling phenoms---#8 Marcarlo (Former USAW Folk National Champion) & #3 Vincenzo Mannello (2024 State 5th; 2024 Super 32 MS belt winner, etc) secured falls at the 2:17 and :43 marks in their bouts against Bairan and Murphy!
