’08 OLYMPIC TRIALS AND ’07 WORLD TRIALS
AWARDED TO LAS VEGAS – USA Wrestling has awarded the 2008 U.S.
Olympic Team Trials – Wrestling and the 2007 U.S. World Team
Trials to Las Vegas, Nev. U! SA Wrestling will partner with Las
Vegas Events to promote and present these two major Olympic
level events which determine the U.S. teams each year.

USA WRESTLING WINS NINE MEDALS AT WORLD
CHAMPIONSHIPS – The U.S. had a strong effort at the World
Wrestling Championships in Guangzhou, China, winning nine
medals, four in men’s freestyle, three in Greco-Roman and two in
women’s freestyle. Champions included Joe Warren in Greco-Roman
and Bill Zadick in freestyle. The U.S. was third in both men’s
freestyle and men’s Greco-Roman in the team standings.

BILL ZADICK WINS FREESTYLE WORLD TITLE – With
an amazing performance on September 28, Bill Zadick of the Gator
WC won! the 66 kg/145.5 lbs. gold medal in freestyle at the
World Wre! stling C hampionships in China. Zadick won five
matches during the day, including a gold-medal triumph over
Otari Tushishvili of Georgia.

JOE WARREN WINS GRECO-ROMAN WORLD TITLE – Joe
Warren of the New York AC became only the fifth U.S. Greco-Roman
wrestler to win a World title, with a victory at 60 kg/132 lbs.
at the World Wrestling Championships in China on September 25.
Warren beat a World gold, silver and bronze medalist prior to
the finals, where he defeated David Bedinadze of Georgia.

ASICS ULTIMATE CHALLENGE SERIES TO FEATURE 10
GREAT EVENTS – The ASICS Ultimate Challenge Series of youth
folkstyle wrestling enters its fifth year, with 10 outstanding
youth folkstyle events. There is a new age division for 7-8 year
olds and a revision of the point system which rewards the
champions of the USA Wrestling Folkstyle Nationals. The series
starts in October and runs through April. All youth wrestlers
are encouraged to participate.

STRONG FIELD EXPECTED AT SUNKIST KIDS
INTERNATIONAL – The first major international meet of the
season, the Sunkist Kids/ASU International Open, is set for Oct.
12-14 in Tempe, Ariz. Many top wrestlers, including three 2006
U.S. Nationals champions, are expected to participate.

FANS CAN GET RESULTS ON THEIR CELLPHONE FROM
TRACKWRESTLING – Fans can receive updated wrestling results from
specific wrestlers competing at major USA Wrestling events
through a new service provided by Trackwrestling. For as low as
$1.50 a wrestler, each match result will be sent as a message to
a cellphone throughout the tournament.

WOODY WINS JUNIOR WORLD GOLD MEDAL – Nicole
Woody ! of the New York AC became the latest U.S. wrestler to
win an age-group World title, when she captured the gold medal
at 44 kg in women’s freestyle at the Junior World Championships
in Guatemala City, Guatemala, August 31. The U.S. had a strong
performance at this event in all three styles.

U.S. BEACH AND SOMBO WORLD TEAMS SET TO
COMPETE IN TURKEY – The United States will field teams at the
first World Beach and Sombo World Championships, set for
Antalya, Turkey, Nov. 1-5. The first World Champions and
medalists will be determined in these two new styles of
international wrestling.

FIVE WOMEN’S OLYMPIC DEVELOPMENTAL CAMPS
AVAILABLE – USA Wrestling will host five Olympic Developmental
Camps for young women wrestlers during the 2006-07 season. These
are designed for wrestlers who have earned “funded access” based
on success in USA events. The camps will be held in Lake Placid,
N.Y., Chula Vista, Calif., Guelph, Canada and two times in
Colorado Springs, Colo.

$1 MILLION DONATION TRIPLES THE NEW! YORK CITY
WRESTLING PROGRAM – The Fund for Public Schools announced a $1
million grant from Beat the Streets Wrestling, Inc. that will
add 60 new middle school and 40 new high school wrestling
programs in New York City’s public schools. This triples the
number of programs currently within the city’s schools.

HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING GROWS AT ALL LEVELS –
The National Federation of State High School Associations has
released its 2005-06 participation study, and high school
wrestling continues to grow. There was an increase in the number
of boys wrestlers and boys wrestling teams, as well as girls
wrestlers and girls wrestling teams. Wrestling remains the No. 6
most popular sport among boys on the high school level.

NATIONAL C! OACH KEV IN JACKSON AT DANA
COLLEGE CLINIC ON OCT. 21 – USA Wrestling’s National Freestyle
Coach Kevin Jackson will be a featured clinician at the Dana
College Fall Clinic in Blair, Neb. on October 21. For $65,
athletes and coaches receive four sessions of technique, NCEP
Copper Certification, a World Championships DVD and a USA
Wrestling membership card.

NWCA NATIONAL DUALS TO REMAIN IN IOWA FOR 2008
AND 2009 – The National Wrestling Coaches Association has
announced that ! the 2008 and 2009 NWCA/Cliff Keen National
Duals will remain a! t the Un iv. of Northern Iowa in 2008 and
2009. Legendary Junior College wrestling coach Ron Mirikitani
has been named as the new NWCA President.

JAMES MADISON UNIV. DROPS 10 TEAMS INCLUDING
WRESTLING – James Madison Univ., a Div. I athletic program,
announced a plan to drop 10 sports, including wrestling, in
order to comply with Title IX. This includes seven men’s teams
and three women’s teams.

COLLEGE SPORTS COUNCIL CALLS ON JAMES MADISON
TO SURVEY STUDENTS – The College Sports Council has called on
James Madison Univ. to conduct a survey of student interest, in
reaction to the decision to drop 10 sports teams. “No one can
honestly argue that the elimination of 10 teams! is progress,
for men or for women,” said Leo Kocher, CSC President.

USOC RELEASES PAN AM GAMES SELECTION
PROCEDURES – The selection procedures for the athlete selection
procedures for the U.S. wrestling teams at the 2007 Pan American
Games has been announced, pending final approval by the U.S.
Olympic Committee.

NATIONAL WRESTLING LEGENDS FUND SET UP TO
SUPPORT WRESTLING – USA Wrestling and the National Wrestling
Hall of Fame have combined efforts to establish the National
Wrestling Legends Fund. This program allows people to support
the programs of both organizations. Author John Irving is the
Honorary Chairman. A special website has been set up for this
new p! rogram.
