USA WRESTLING GRAPPLING TRIALS SET FOR LAS VEGAS, JUNE 9-10 – USA Wrestlng has announced that it will host its first U.S. Grappling World Team Trials at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nev., alongside the World Team Trials in the Olympic styles. A series of qualifying events have been established to determine the athletes who can compete in the Grappling Trials.

ESPNU TO AIR THREE USA WRESTLING EVENTS THIS SPRING – ESPNU will air three major USA Wrestling events nationally this spring. The U.S. Women’s Nationals will be broadcast on Tuesday, May 1. EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEETING HELD IN AUBURN HILLS, MICH. – USA Wrestling’s Executive Committee had an in-person meeting at the Palace Club in Auburn Hills, Mich. The meeting was chaired by USA Wrestling President Jim Ravannack and a number of decisions were made. It was the first in-person Executive Committee meeting since the by-laws were changed requiring this meeting.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. TO HOST BEACH NATIONALS, JULY 6-8 Rochester, N.Y. has been awarded the 2007 U.S. Beach National Championships and World Team Trials, which will be held on Charlotte Beach, July 6-8. This is the qualifying event for the U.S. World Team that will compete in Antalya, Turkey in September. There will be numerous age-group national levels contested at the Beach Nationals.

WISCONSIN’S JESSE THIELKE WINS ULTIMATE DOMINATOR AWARD – Jesse Thielke of Wisconsin was crowned the Ultimate Dominator after scoring the most points in the 2007 ASICS Ultimate Challenge Series of Folkstyle Wrestling. A total of 12 Dominator Belts were awarded, with the top three placewinners in each of the four Ultimate Challenge Series divisions honored.

USA WRESTLING HOSTS HISTORIC GRAPPLING SUMMIT IN COLORADO – USA Wrestling hosted a Grappling Summit at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. on March 10, bringing together many leaders from Grappling and USA Wrestling to discuss future plans for Grappling, which is now recognized as an international style of wrestling.

IFL AND USA WRESTLING ENTER STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP – The International Fight League, the first team-based professional mixed martial arts league, and USA Wrestling have announced a strategic partnership to promote the two organizations. USA WRESTLING VISITS COLORADO HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING AMPUTEES – USA Wrestling staff and athletes, as well as leaders from U.S. Paralympics, visited with high school wrestlers Tyler Carron and Nikko Landeros from Berthoud, Colo., who had their legs amputated after an automobile accident this spring. The meeting allowed people to encourage and support the boys in their recovery.

COLLEGE SPORTS COUNCIL STUDY REVEALS ALARMING DECLINE IN COLLEGE TEAMS – A study of NCAA athletic participation data released by the College Sports Council shows steep and steady declines in college athletic opportunities for men. “There has never been a more urgent time to reform Title IX,” said Jessica Gavora, the CSC Communications Director.

FRASER NAMED FINALIST FOR U.S. OLYMPIC COMMITTEE COACHING AWARD -  USA Wrestling National Greco-Roman Coach Steve Fraser was one of five finalists for the U.S. Olympic Committee National Coach of the Year Award. Fraser led the USA to a record third-place finish at the 2006 World Championships, with three medalists.

BEN ASKREN WINS DAN HODGE AWARD FOR SECOND STRAIGHT YEAR Missouri senior Ben Askren, the NCAA Div. I champion at 174 pounds, received the Dan Hodge Award as the nation’s top college wrestler for the second straight year.

WOMEN’S WRESTLING CLUB CREATED AT LOCK HAVEN UNIV. – Lock Haven Univ. has announced that it will start a women’s wrestling club program for the 2007-08 seasons. Terry Fike will serve as the team’s coach, and the athletes will train and compete on the national level.
